Some of the best wine on the west coast isn’t made in California. Really! There are a healthy number of wineries in Arizona, making some of the best wine you’ve ever tasted. Arizona wine isn’t as publicized as the stuff made in California, but it’s a well kept secret. Yes, grapes grow in a state primarily known for desert. Maybe the plan is for everyone to think wine can’t be made in a state associated with 110 degree heat, and then they give you a glass of this liquid sunshine, and you couldn’t be any more amazed by it.

I’ll tell you about a couple of wine trails in Arizona; one in the north, and one in the south. In southern Arizona, we have the Sonoita Wine Trail. Sonoita, a small community in far southern Arizona, has several great wineries, 10 of which are on the trail. Callaghan Vineyards is the middle stop on the trail. They have several red wines, including a Cabernet 2008 with hints of red pepper. Charron Vineyards makes a nice Arizona wine, a white Merlot, but it’s the only one they make.
